Integrated Studies
An integrated studies option is available in order to allow students
to align themselves formally with two fields of specialization within
the Department. This program is intended to accommodate the needs of
students whose research interests cross the boundaries between two areas
of study.
After admission to the graduate program in a particular field of specialization,
a student may choose to engage in an integrated studies option, but
only with the strong support of two joint advisers, one from each of
the two fields of specialization involved and the approval of the GSC.
The student is required to submit a formal proposal to the GSC for this
purpose by the end of his or her fourth semester in the graduate program.
The proposal (no more than three pages in length) should justify the
intellectual integrity of the envisioned field of study and explain
how the requirements of the specific program of study cannot be adequately
met within the constraints of other existing structures. The proposal
should include the proposed language requirements and the areas of the
Doctoral Examinations for the student. The proposal must be approved
by the two principal advisers. Both advisers will serve on the student’s
Doctoral Examination committee, and one will act as director of the
dissertation.
If the student has been admitted into the Department’s M.A. program,
this option may be exercised only after the student has fulfilled the
M.A. Field Examination requirement of the student’s original field
of specialization. This integrated studies option is not envisioned
as necessarily requiring more extensive coursework or a greater number
of Doctoral Examinations than is normally taken by other students in
one field of specialization. However, in some cases additional work
may be necessary to reasonably fulfill the requirements of the proposed
program of study.
