Suggested Five-Year Schedule

NOTE: The time it takes to complete the graduate program will vary by admission option (M.A.-Ph.D., M.A. with opportunity to bypass, or Ph.D. only), by field of specialization, and by the needs of individual students. This suggested five-year schedule for the M.A.-Ph.D. option can help you plan your progress. However, this basic schedule does not take into account the additional time needed to conduct field research or acquire foreign language skills beyond those required by the graduate school. Consult your advisor or the Director of Graduate Studies for more information.


Year 1

Courses to take:  5 + RELI 700  (18 hours)

 Take RELI 700 Offered Fall or Spring semester
 Take Foreign Language Proficiency Assessment
(first required language)
Fall semester
 Select faculty advisor
Fall semester
 Select readers for Field Examination and compile
reading lists
Spring semester
 Read for Field Examination Spring and Summer semesters


Year 2

Courses to take:  4 + RELI 993  (18 hours)

 Take Field Examination Fall semester
 Select thesis committee, submit proposal First month of Spring semester
 Write M.A. thesis (RELI 993) Spring semester
 Defend thesis At least two weeks before Spring semester ends
 Apply for graduation Spring semester
 Petition to continue to the Ph.D. program After exams and thesis defense


Year 3

Courses to take:  6  (18 hours)

 Take Foreign Language Proficiency Assessment
(second required language)
Fall semester
 Select dissertation and exams committee Spring semester
 Compile reading lists for Doctoral Examinations Spring semester
 Read for Doctoral Examinations Spring and Summer semesters


Year 4

Courses to take:  RELI 994

 Take Doctoral Examinations Fall semester
 Submit dissertation proposal * At least 30 days before Spring semester ends

* "At least thirty days prior to the end of the semester that follows the completion of the Doctoral Examinations, each student must prepare a proposal for a doctoral dissertation under the guidance of the student's advisor." (Graduate Program Policies and Procedures)


Year 5

Courses to take:  RELI 994

 Research and write dissertation (RELI 994) Fall and Spring semesters
 Defend dissertation Spring semester
 Apply for graduation Spring semester
