Dr. Winters’ talk examines hip hop at the intersection of black studies and theories of the sacred. While hip hop exhibits different kinds of religiosity, his project situates hip hop as an expression of excess and rupture. These qualities diverge from traditional notions of the sacred (purity, wholeness) and gesture toward a more disruptive sense of religion and spirituality. Among other artists, he analyzes the music of Lauryn Hill and Kendrick Lamar.
