Updating Ur: Mesopotamian Households in Light of New Excavations (CANCELLED)

March 17, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

This event has been cancelled due to COVID-19 related travel and gathering restrictions. We hope to re-schedule in the Fall.

On Tuesday, March 17, there will be a Public Lecture by Elizabeth Stone and Paul Zimansky (Stony Brook University). Here is a description:

“Beginning in 2015, a Stony Brook University expedition directed by Elizabeth Stone and Paul Zimansky has devoted three field seasons to investigating the residential districts of this storied city in southern Mesopotamia, attempting to understand how Ur’s transition from the seat of a powerful empire in the late 3rd millennium to a city-state ruled by outsiders in the early 2nd millennium affected patterns of daily life. Excavations in and around the Old Babylonian houses excavated by Sir Leonard Woolley almost a century ago have brought to light several new elite residences, whose owners are documented by cuneiform tablets and seal impressions Finds from below these house raise questions about whether there was a comparable city here during the empire of the 3rd Dynasty of Ur.”
