The Overwhelming Event and Black Testimony from the Immanent Divine

September 30, 2020 @ 11:15 am - 12:15 pm

Dr. Youssef Carter, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, will be a key note speaker in the Department of African, African American, & Diaspora Studies’ Colloquium series! The talk is titled: “The Overwhelming Event and Black Testimony from the Immanent Divine”.

“Within the past year, two prominent hip-hop artists — Kanye West and Jay Electronica — released albums that were informed by their respective religious beliefs. Aside from this is the remarkable fact that both albums suggest visions for uplift and freedom, although tethered to notions of economic and political domination via kingship and throne-seeking.”

In this presentation, Dr. Carter offers a reflection on the varying tensions therein regarding race, religion, and freedom.
